World famous US uni developing north-east entrepreneurs

A new generation of global entrepreneurs – including a pipeline of AI-driven enterprises – will be developed in the North-east of Scotland through collaboration with one of the world’s most famous universities.

Boston-based MIT has long been a breeding ground for globally recognised companies.

MIT alumni developed industry-defining firms such as Intel, Bose, HubSpot and Dropbox. Now, it is hoped the next global scale-up could emerge from the North-east, as founders are equipped not only with the tools to grow, but with the discipline and methodologies proven to significantly improve start-up success rates.

At the heart of the ONE and MIT collaboration is MIT’s Disciplined Entrepreneurship (DE) 24-step framework – a structured, customer-focused approach to building scalable ventures. While globally only around 10% of start-ups succeed, approximately 61% of companies emerging from MIT’s delta v accelerator and DE programme are still operating or have been acquired within five years.

The collaboration is embedding this framework into the region’s ecosystem, with a clear focus on enabling founders to harness artificial intelligence to build and scale what are being termed AI Driven Enterprises (AIDEs).

Jennifer Craw, Chief Executive of Opportunity North East (ONE), said: “Bringing MIT to the north east is about building ambition and capability at scale. We are equipping founders with the mindset, discipline and AI tools to create businesses that solve real problems customers will pay for and scale them globally.

“What is different now is the scale of the AI opportunity and we are building a pipeline of AI-driven enterprises that can transform industries and define the region’s future economy.”

ONE has worked with MIT for five years, previously taking delegations of founders to Boston to participate in the Entrepreneurship Development Programme. This new phase marks the first time MIT’s expertise is being delivered at scale in Aberdeen, significantly widening access and embedding a consistent approach to venture creation across the region.

The programme is already underway. In recent days, more than 100 entrepreneurs and business leaders took part in bootcamps and AI workshops led by Paul Cheek – serial tech entrepreneur, Senior Advisor to the Martin Trust Center for MIT Entrepreneurship, and Senior Lecturer at MIT Sloan School of Management.

Participants have been applying the Disciplined Entrepreneurship framework in practice while also exploring how AI can be used to validate ideas faster, prototype more efficiently and scale more effectively.

Paul Cheek said: “For many years I’ve had the opportunity to teach entrepreneurs from Aberdeen at MIT through our collaboration with ONE. They’ve sent entrepreneurs year after year and the thing I love most is coming back and seeing those entrepreneurs, but also hearing their stories of what they went on to do after the programme. That gives me so much joy!”

“The thing that has surprised me most about our sessions in the past few days has been the curiosity for what AI has the potential to do for their businesses. Not just for their businesses, but the businesses they advise and they work with. What I’ve seen is that even those who may have been sceptical to begin with have very quickly seen the opportunities AI presents for their businesses and for the region.”

His visit builds on earlier engagement from MIT Entrepreneur in Residence Ben Soltoff, who worked with North-east climate and energy ventures and has recently published an adaptation of the Disciplined Entrepreneurship approach for climate tech companies.

Thanks to the work of ONE and partners, the North-east is already home to one of Scotland’s most dynamic high-growth tech clusters, with more than 300 businesses spanning agritech, clean tech, health tech, sustainability and energy tech.

With the MIT’s framework and a clear focus on AI-enabled growth, the region is positioning itself to compete on a global stage – and to produce the next generation of internationally scaling companies.
